A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
