Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
