The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of multiple weeks, the American president started showing everyone his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with the government.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense of him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler arising; rather, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide them your pullover as well.
The evident and direct reality that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a form of profound affection centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
So I have been heartened to see the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, by relationship to the highest about American history, just as Christianity is best defended through connection to what makes it special and wonderful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest pretending the most negative about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it means both modesty and conviction, a mixture that serious national faithful should embrace.
