Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
